HOW TO APPROACH THE OVERTONE APP & CONTENTS
An Invitation to Explore
Approach Overtone with a sense of exploration and curiosity, discover different instruments and observe the sensations and emotions you experience.
Just put your attention on the sound.
The harmonic overtones will guide you.
(What are the harmonic overtones?)
Harmonic overtones, often referred to simply as overtones or harmonics, are frequencies higher than the fundamental frequency of a sound, produced by a vibrating object. When a musical instrument or voice produces a note, it generates not just a single frequency (the fundamental frequency, which determines the pitch) but also a series of higher frequencies called harmonics.
Notice the different tones and overtones and spaces in between, the vibration, the volume, the timbre. How they merge into one another, how they interact with each other.
When you get distracted by thoughts just bring your attention back to the sound.
Trust the experience, don't judge it, just practice coming back to the sound.
4 PRO TIPS
KEEP AN OPEN MIND
Each person’s relationship and response to a specific sound will be unique. Therefore, it is important to keep an open and welcoming mindset to all emotions that might arise from a specific instrument or sequence. Sound is not prescriptive, but it can suggest processes and provide direction and entrain emotional resonance. Sometimes a sound might feel confronting, create the sensation of tension, or sound dissonant. In other moments, we might wish to cling to the beauty and peacefulness connected to a specific instrument in a listening session to stay forever, and for the calming sensations and effects to be reliably repeatable.
OBSERVE
Think about using this App as a tool for observing the inner landscape, and the instruments as different filters, lenses, hues and invitations to explore different emotions.
SET AN INTENTION
Another helpful element for creating a rich container for listening is setting an intention. This can be in the form of asking oneself what it is that we wish to let go of, to not carry, to unburden ourselves with, and what we wish to welcome in, to multiply and to embrace. You may even find it helpful to simplify the intention to one single word. This attention to environment and mindset will deepen your practice and potentiate the value of each listening experience.
SET YOUR CONTAINER
In all listening sessions, we suggest creating an intentional container. Try to find a sonically quiet and isolated space. Use headphones or earbuds. We invite you to remove any potential visual distractions by closing your eyes or using and eye mask or scarf.
Overtone is designed to be used for dropping in to a brief mindful listening experience, or for a more extended sound journey, as well as for preparing, supporting and integrating peak experiences in non-ordinary or expanded states.
